I should mention that the network settings as such are sane. When I "wire" the machines to a small switch they behave perfectly (same settings as in original post but substitute ra0 for eth0). The problem persists. Both machines say that the ad-hoc link is up but no machine will talk to the other.

Wireless power is on - light on. No 'antenna icon', but the wireless indicator is enabled - I see a PDA icon with an underbar connection (maybe a 'wire' - but isn't this wireless?) instead. This icon seems to correctly report the status/signal strength of the wireless network. But I never see the 'antenna'.

for the suggestions made to you, you should certainly look inot using the zero config service to handle the connection to your wireless network.
